Landscape Design Harmony, Serenity

Zen 禅

Wabi-sabi embodies the appreciation of imperfection, impermanence and simplicity. Zen gardens often incorporate elements with a rustic, weathered aesthetic to evoke the beauty of the ephemeral nature of life.

Kanso is the principle of simplicity and elimination of clutter. Zen gardens embrace this concept by keeping their design minimalist and uncluttered, allowing for a feeling of clarity and tranquility.

Ma 間

In Japanese garden design, "ma" is used to create a feeling of space, tranquility and a sense of blooming beauty. The careful arrangement of garden elements, such as stones, plants and paths, takes into account the concept of “my” to ensure a harmonious balance between full and empty. Essentially, “ma” is about space and pause between elements, allowing the viewer to appreciate not only the individual elements themselves, but also the relationship and balance between them. It is a concept that encourages contemplation and appreciation of simplicity, contributing to the general feeling of beauty and serenity of Japanese gardens

Shakkei 借景

Shakkei, or "borrowed landscape", is the practice of incorporating the surrounding natural landscape into the design of the Japanese garden. It connects the garden to the larger environment, blurring boundaries and creating a fluid and harmonious experience.

Karesansui 枯山水

Karesansui, also known as dryscape or rockery, is a quintessential element of Zen gardens. It represents the essence of the natural world through carefully arranged stones and raked gravel, inviting contemplation and to meditation.

Kanshō 感性

Kansho refers to the sensory and emotional response that a Zen garden evokes. It emphasizes the garden's ability to evoke deep feelings and sensations through its design, textures and elements.

Fukinsei 不均斉

Fukinsei embraces asymmetry and the beauty of imperfection. In Zen gardens, it's about creating a sense of balance and harmony without strict symmetry, as it is believed that perfect symmetry can seem static.

Jo-ha-kyū 序破急

Jo-ha-kyū is a concept borrowed from Noh theater, which translates to “start, pause and fast”. It is used to create a sense of rhythm and movement in the design and arrangement of garden elements. The garden elements follow a structured sequence to create anticipation and a sense of climax.

Yūgen 幽玄

Yūgen represents an aesthetic sense of profound mystery and profundity. In the Zen garden, it is about creating an atmosphere of quiet elegance and subtlety, leaving room for interpretation and contemplation.
